он 64битный, но буква i"a" меня смущает.

Он с поддержкой 64-разрядных инструкций, но не ia64.
ia64 - это Intel Itanium.

дистрибутив какой выбрать тогда из дебиан? [i386] ?

Либо i386, либо x86-64 (может быть просто x64). ia64 не подойдёт.
